Tackling transportation safety issuesThe House Transportation Committee will meet at 9:15 a.m. on Tuesday, May 3, to discuss the following pieces of transportation legislation:

• House Bill 8 – Prohibits the operation of motor vehicles while using interactive wireless communication devices, which includes various types of cell phones, while operating a motor vehicle.

• House Bill 9 – Prohibits a junior driver from driving with more than one passenger under age 18 (except siblings); and requires 65 hours of practical driving on a learners’ permit, including ten hours of night driving and five hours of inclement weather driving.

• House Bill 170 – Requires any pedacycle being operated in traffic to travel in the right-hand lane or as close to the right curb as possible unless passing another vehicle or when preparing for a left-hand turn. It also requires any vehicle passing a pedacycle to pass to the left no less than four feet away at a careful and prudent speed.

• House Bill 896 - Increases fines for careless driving if it is determined that the driver at the time of the violation was distracted by any electronic device, electrical device, personal grooming device, food, drink, book or other printed material.

Disposing of unused or expired medication - The second National Prescription Drug Take Back Day will take place this Saturday, April 30, 2011, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Road projects in the district - Construction of a box culvert on State Route 955 (Iroquois Avenue) over Rachel Run will begin Monday, May 2. The project is situated on SR 955 between Nagle Road and Walbridge Road.

The project is scheduled to be completed and the road reopened by June 3. Two week advance closure signs will be placed prior to the road being closed.

A detour is to be posted using State Route 4029 (Nagle Road) and State Route 20 (Buffalo Road).

Also, one eastbound lane and one westbound lane of I-90 is closed between Exit 18 (Sterrettania/Presque Isle State Park) and Mile Post 23, one mile west of Exit 24 (Waterford/Peach Street), due to road construction. The lane restriction is expected to be lifted by noon this Friday
